The Future of Smart Homes: Trends to Watch in 2025!

by | Apr 16, 2025 | Blog

From laundry rooms to kitchens and even your front door, artificial intelligence is transforming smart homes everywhere. AI-powered appliances and systems are getting smarter, faster, and more intuitive—helping homeowners save time, money, and energy. Let’s explore some of the top AI and non-AI tech trends shaping modern homes in 2025.

AI Powered Technology

Water

Smart water sensors can prevent damage from leaks, but AI is taking sensors to the next level. For example, LG’s new AI-powered washing machines automatically choose the correct settings and dispense detergent and fabric softener based on the weight and type of fabric in each load. You can trust the machine more than a laundry novice to extend the life of your clothes. And their AI-powered dryers sense weight and moisture levels. No more feeling around, trying to figure out if your laundry is actually dry or just warm.

Kitchen

We still don’t have a Rosie the Robot à la The Jetsons, but there are some cool advances coming in AI-powered kitchen appliances. Brands like Samsung have been doing smart refrigerators that help minimize food waste and cooking ranges that can keep you from burning your food. David Watsky of CNET said in a recent article, “In the year ahead, I expect to hear less from top kitchen manufacturers about how their latest tool or appliance can do it for you, and more about how it can help you do it faster, safer and more efficiently.”

Home Security

Home security is getting a boost from AI, bringing safety technology to the next level. One interesting advance by Schlage is an ultra-wideband, or UWB, smart lock that tracks the exact location of a target. “Schlage’s smart deadbolt can rapidly connect to an authorized phone and calculate its speed, trajectory, and motion. In theory, that allows the lock to open only as the wielder reaches the door, not before nor with annoying delays. Whether you’re ambling with a tired toddler or rushing to get groceries indoors in the rain, the lock is made to respond at just the right time.”

The Trends Not Reliant on AI

Not everyone is comfortable with the rise in AI, and there are plenty of smart home trends and breakthroughs that don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Home Efficiency

Creating energy-efficient homes continues to be a goal, and while the technology is intelligent, it’s not necessarily artificial intelligence. Sara Gutterman, CEO of Green Builder Media, says “systems within a home that learn the occupants’ behavior and interact with the grid to activate peak load shifting and shedding in order to save homeowners money and reduce grid stress” will be a top smart home trend in 2025. HVAC systems are the biggest contributor to high energy bills, followed by large appliances (think kitchen and laundry room), so systems to make them more efficient will continue to be developed and improved.

Smart Water Trends

Smart toilets and sprinklers are on the rise in popularity, according to Zillow. That’s right, even our toilets are smart now. According to Kohler, smart toilets give you a “superior bathroom experience,” and can include luxuries like Alexa-integrated speakers, nightlights, automatic cleaning functions, heated seats, and more. Not to mention the built-in bidets. Those are a given.

All of these advances are set to make our lives just a little bit easier, and maybe one day Rosie the Robot will be a reality. There’s already a robot vacuum in the works that can tidy as it makes its way around the house. Contact us today to get started on your smart home.
